Will a trumpet mouthpiece fit a cornet?
For example a cornet mouthpiece will not fit in a trumpet / a trumpet mouthpiece will not fit in a cornet / medium and medium large trombones require small shank mouthpieces while large bore trombones will use large shank mouthpieces!
How do you size a mouthpiece?
The number 1 1/4 refers to the width of the hole inside the mouthpiece. It doesn’t refer to inches – there doesn’t seem to be any logic to the number. The first number “1” refers to the size of the cup (scroll down to see illustration below) and the lower the number, the bigger the cup size.

Tye 7C is NOT a small mouthpiece. It is smaller than a 5C, indeed, but there are many players playing equipment smaller than a 10 1/2C. If you find you are having trouble getting a good sound, it is YOU and the mouthpiece, not just the mouthpiece.

Is 3C better than 7C?
Having played both quite a lot, the 3C is quite a bit “brighter” than the 7C for me. The 7C has a different kind of sound, but the fact it is slightly narrower in diameter does not serve to make it brighter. The 7C difference for me seems to be a slightly deeper cup. There is a lot of difference in the 3C and 7C rims.
